One rider nails her colours to the mast and reveals international ambitions — but no-section classes leave little space for cobs and natives

ANNIE RAWLINS was on in the Hickstead Dressage Masters Southern Semi Final (2-3June). According to judges, she put her casual persona aside, nailed her colours to the mast and rode some super horses with intent to win. Partnering the only lightly-competed Belissimo M x Rousseau seven-year-old mare, Georgie, she produced the 73.16% winning Medium 73 Southern Semi-final test. Her judge at C, Sally Andrews, commented: “It was the best test I’ve ever seen Annie ride. She concentrated every step of the way and didn’t waste a mark. I was delighted for her.”

Annie confirmed: “I was riding to win today because this show is leading up to a championships but I don’t like to go out to every show and put a huge amount of pressure on my horses, or myself to be honest. I go out to fix the things I messed up the previous time and I try to improve my riding to give the horses the best chance possible and for them to have a positive experience."

Anne Marie Rawlins at 25: “I’m nowhere near where I want to be but my eyes are on the big prizes and I’m definitely focused!”

Annie added: “Without my wonderful team at home, my Dad (Dane Rawlins) and Kerry Ford  — and a wonderful owner in Caroline Edgeley, there’s no way I’d be riding up that centreline.”

While Annie looks primarily to Holland — where she has a valuable family connection to help in locating top competition material — others make a lifetime journey out of breeding it. Suzanne Lavandera’s famous stallion Dimaggio is the Daddy of many wonderful and successful horses, including Keystone Diaggio (Dimaggio x Florestan). We have not seen much of ‘Arthur’
