‘DEXTER’ has made a dream come true for small hobby breeder Tracy Cooper. He has been talent-spotted by our Olympic star Charlotte Dujardin and joined her mega-talented string two weeks ago. His stable mates include the best of British from top breeders Hawtins Stud and Mount St John.
Over the past two years the Dimaggio x De Niro 17.1hh gelding has been taken from being an inexperienced Novice horse up to small tour by East Sussex-based trainer and rider Luke Baber-Davies who himself trains with Carl.
Tracy’s decision to move the ride came after much soul-searching. She said: “It was a very hard decision for me and it’s very sad for Luke. He had a great relationship with Dexter and loves him, but as a breeder you have to do what’s best for your offspring. I’ve always known how talented Dex is, but he’s nine now and if he’s going to make it into the big time he has to be with people who can take him there. With Luke it would have taken longer and possibly have been nearer the end of the horse’s competition life.”
Luke is currently backing Dexter’s three-year-old brother Keystone Drum Roll who he and Tracy both think is possibly an even better horse.
It is expected that Dexter will be on a learning curve this season while he and Charlotte discover each other’s buttons and build a relationship. Tracy added: “Ideally Charlotte would like to get Dexter qualified for the summer regionals but she needs to see how he is at shows. He can get stressed and tense competing, so she’s taking the opportunity of a cancellation to ride him in the PSG at Hartpury today (12 May). It will be a quiet day as the Addington Premier League is on.”
Dexter may also be given a glimpse of glamour and the ‘big show’ atmosphere that hopefully awaits him in the future — but without competitive pressure — participating in her Master Class at the Royal County of Berkshire Polo Club, Windsor, 28 July.
Dexter’s dam, who is owned by Jenine Jones, has recently given birth to a bay colt foal by Keystone Diaggio which will be for sale. Jenine works in Tracy’s home-based accountancy business in the west of London outer suburb of Harefield. Tracy also runs Cripps House Equestrian livery yard.
